Issue Position: Education

Issue Position

High standards, accountability for results, and increased involvement by local school boards, teachers, state legislatures and parents are all essential to improving education. That's one of the reasons why I voted against President Bush's No Child Left Behind legislation -- it created too much bureaucracy and didn't give enough control to local individuals. Individual school districts know what is best for our kids. What works in West Bend may not be as effective in Milwaukee. We need to continue to push for common-sense reform to empower parents, provide more local control, and reduce the federal education bureaucracy to help our children succeed. Overall, the federal government should play a minimal role in education so that school districts and teachers can set policy that best meets the needs of individual students.
